Grainau - the green meadow in Wetterstein
Geographically Grainau belongs to the Werdenfelser Land. The beautiful landscape of Grainau with its natural charm shows its most beautiful sides both summer and winter. The highlight is a direct view to the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. But this is not the only mountain you can admire from Grainau. To the north of Grainau is the Kammerspitz in the Ammergau Alps, and to the south lies the Waxenstein mountain range, with the Großer Waxenstein as the highest peak of this ridge.
Although the region around Grainau was developed very well for tourists, it could still preserve its nativeness, so that you can enjoy the untouched nature during walks or hikes. Many places like the Hammersbacher Wiesen offer a special view on the mountain region, which amazes locals as well as holidaymakers again and again.
Grainau in summer
The name "Gruenawe" means "green meadow" and gives information about the natural beauty of the village, which is embedded in the Wetterstein mountains with its lush meadows. A diverse flora and fauna dominates the place, which can be admired especially in the summer months. Hiking fans get their money's worth.
Grainau in winter
The region around Grainau is not unreasonably considered one of the top ski resorts in Germany. In the cold season, Grainau offers not only the beautiful, snow-covered landscape, but also numerous offers and sporting events for winter sports enthusiasts. A winter holiday in the Grainau region is definitely worth it!

The Grainau Music Pavilion A most impressive setting for concerts, Heimatabend down-home evenings or celebrations
Situated in
the town center against an awesome mountain backdrop – that is the
Grainau Music Pavilion, the center of Grainau's numerous outdoor events. In the summer, vacationers and locals alike enjoy the popular "Kur"
concerts of the local orchestra or the traditional
evenings with local foods and customs, Heimatabende,
and Park Fests with the local folkloric dress club. The religious holiday service on
Pentecost is also held in the Music Pavilion. In the winter, you can visit the Grainau Christmas market or the Snow Fest, which has already developed into a tradition, in the Music Pavilion. The
Pavilion is also a perfect venue for company events and incentive events.
Participants can dance, play or celebrate no matter what the weatherman says, as the pavilion is partially roofed over. An additional tarp can be added as needed, similar to a large tent. There
is parking in front of the Kurhaus, Grainau's visitors' center. From there, it's just a few minutes walk to the Music Pavilion.
Enjoy true Bavarian fun in Grainau in the summertime: At the
traditional evenings with
local foods and customs, Heimatabende and Park Fests (Culture Evenings), you can enjoy yodeling, Schuhplattler dancing, traditional sawing and
tapping of beer kegs to your heart's content.
And there's the Grainau Farmer's Theater to entertain you from mid of May until October. Even if you don't understand the Bavarian dialect, you will be sure
to find the scenery and action most entertaining!

Höllentalklamm
Steep walls, waterfalls, rapids, cave passages, exposed crate and rock stairs are to be found in the gorges, which digged mountain streams through the mountain cliffs. The Höllentalklamm is an hiking experience, where it’s a good idea to bring a good foodwear and water-repellent clothes.
The entrance hut to the Höllentalklamm is on 1047 metres height and reachable in about one and an half hours hike from Grainauer district Hammersbach.
From there you hike through the Klamm in further 45 minutes til the Klamm exit. Rewarding is the hike’s continuation til the höllentalangerhut, from there you not only have got a very nice view to the tops of the Waxenstones, Riffelwalls and the Zugspitze, which bordered the valley, but also you can rise starched after a rest, either til the named tops with appropriate stepsafety and practice, or til the Kreuzeck or Osterfelderkopf.
Partnachklamm, also in Winter
Partnachklamm is a gorge crossed by waterfalls and rapids. In 1912 this gorge was recognised as a natural monument and the beauty of this unique sight was preserved. Not only in summer the Partnachklamm is wonderful to look at, in winter visitors can experience a very special highlight. With a guided torchlight hike through the Partnachklamm you will experience something magical. In winter, ice curtains form on the walls of the gorge. With the light of the torch and the reflection in the ice it seems like a dream world.

Garmisch-Classic Skiarea
Three mountains for unparalleled winter fun. Hausberg, Kreuzeck & Alpspitze. The Garmisch-Classic ski area promises alpine ski fun to suit every style – from leisurely to downright ambitious. Hausberg, Kreuzeck and Alpspitze. 40 kilometers of snowy pists in an altitude between 700 metres up to 2050 meters provide a variety of slopes and unique impressions.
By interlinking the three mountains, Hausberg, Kreuzeck and Alpspitze, a diverse ski area encompassing 40 kilometres of pistes and four downhill runs with artificial snow making facilities has been created.
Families and less experienced skiers feel well at home on the predominantly easy to moderate slopes. Young skiers can learn the basics at the “Kinderland” next to the top station of the Hausbergbahn cable car. Challenges for skiers of all abilities can be found just below the Alpspitze Peak on fabulous slopes just above the tree line – against one of the most beautiful backdrops to be found in the northern Alps.
Ski area Zugspitze
The Zugspitze as the Germany’s highest mountain surely is the main event for all mountain enthusiasts, who want to go higher and ambitious ways. The Zugspitze is 2962 metres high and marks the boundary to Austria. The terrific top view is not just per foot, but also comfortable reachable with the use of the different railways, either from Garmisch with the cog railway or from Grainau and Ehrwald with the ropeway. Thanks to advantageous altitude levels of between 2,000 and 2,720 metres above sea level, the slopes enjoy a deep covering of natural snow for six months of the year and are drenched in winter sunshine, even when the valley is submerged in a thick blanket of fog. Families and beginners, experienced carvers and snowboarders alike enjoy the 20 km of perfectly groomed runs in easy to moderate levels of difficulty. Snow conditions permitting, the fabulous Riffelriß downhill run is also open (accessible via cogwheel train / Riffelriß station). Winter fans can also enjoy a spot of tobogganing and first class alpine cuisine on Germany’s highest glacier. Visitors are rewarded with stunning panoramic views from all four mountain restaurants! The Zugspitze was the first German ski resort to receive the coveted title of „Certified Ski Resort“ from the Foundation for Safety in Ski Sports. This seal of quality guarantees clearly defined standards of safety. The two chairlifts, Wetterwandeck and Sonnenkar, also whisk users safely and comfortably up to the natural snow slopes. With modern weather protection hoods, these 6-seater chairlifts, are equipped for all (snow) conditions.
Ski area Alpspitze
The Alpspitz ski area has several chair lifts and gondola lifts and transports over 3000 people per hour to the slopes. The slopes are always well prepared so that nothing stands in the way of skiing fun. The downhills on the Albspitz are not only ideal for experts, is also ideal for those who still want to learn.
Ski area Kreuzeck
About 4 kilometres south of Garmisch Partenkirchen rises the mountain Kreuzeck with its skiing area on more than 1300 meters altitude. The Kreuzeck ski area is well known as a venue for Olympic Games and World Cup participations.
A special highlight of the Kreuzeck is the Kandahar descent. A steep incline make this descent a favourite with alpine sports fans giving them the absolute adrenaline rush
Ski area Hausberg
The skiing area Hausberg is especially suitable for beginners who have only just discovered the fun of skiing. There are pistes that range from easy to medium level of difficulty. The ski lift of the Hausbergbahn, takes you directly up to the piste on the Hausberg.
